Drug Detox Programs
Differences among drug detox programs

What are the differences among the major drug detox programs out there? In terms of relieving the physical symptoms and side effects of opioid addiction, many top programs now employ both buprenorphine and methadone therapies to "sub out" less addicting opioids for drugs like hydrocodone, heroine, and oxycodone. Buprenorphine approaches have demonstrated high rates of non invasive, out patient success, and the NAABT (National American Association of Buprenorphine Therapists) has flourished over the past half decade.

  • Another unique drug treatment approach is so-called rapid opiate detox. Basically, patients are put under anesthesia and then kept in an emergency care unit as their bodies physically withdraw from the drug. Although physicians constantly monitor the anesthetized patient, the costs of this detox treatment and its medical reliability have raised some eyebrows in the medical community.

A third method of drug detox involves going "cold turkey." Prescription drug addicts for instance, simply quit taking their medications -- either under the supervision of doctors or under the less trained supervision of friends and family members.

Self treatment for serious detox can work, but it can also lead to medical emergencies, particularly if the withdrawal effects create medical complications or if patients attempt to medicate detox side effects with contraindicated drugs. Finally, there are multi-disciplinary drug detox programs which borrow from many different treatment philosophies and employ post-detox coaching to ensure that addicts remain clean after the physical process is finished.
