Vicodin Abuse
What to do when Vicodin Abuse Relapses happen?

A friend or loved one recently came off of a major Vicodin addiction. But a pressure at work, deep seated psychological traumas, or recovery pain has caused a relapse. What are the consequences for relapsing on hydrocodone, and how can a sympathetic observer create the conditions for a return to vicodin detox and rehab?

  • Perhaps the most stark danger is that the first relapse dose causes an overdose. The body and brain compensate for the intake of opiates like hydrocodone and chemically adapt to opioid ingestion. Thus, by the end of Vicodin addiction, tolerance is usually very high. In other words, addicts can tolerate huge amounts of Vicodin that could cause an opioid naive individual to go into seizure or complete respiratory failure.

Once you have come clean from Vicodin, however, your body returns to its native opioid naive state. Thus, if you relapse and take a "typical" high dose of the drug, massive, potential fatal consequences can ensue. In addition, Vicodin abusers tend to get caught in a cycle of detox, rehab, and drug abuse, and this seemingly unbreakable bond creates new psychological stresses, such as depression.

Researchers have found that the key to kicking Vicodin abuse is to couple savvy detox (e.g. buprinorphine tapering off) with individual therapies and coachings to manage the impulses which often feed urges to use drugs. Although there may not be a perfect solution for all opiate users, individual addicts can often find solace in a basket of complimentary therapies which speak to issues of personal concern, whether they be psychological hang ups or chemical or physical imbalances.
